GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany – The Kandahar slope was frostier on Monday morning than it’s been so far these world championships for the super-combined downhill race and though conditions were once again hard and bumpy, Aksel Lund Svindal was on a mission to defend his title.
The Norwegian who won gold in the world champs super-combi in 2009 and was a bit sore from Saturday’s downhill race, in which he finished fifth but crash-landed into the finish barrier, is leading after the downhill portion of the race. Blazing down the Kandahar in 1 minute, 59.49 seconds, Svindal is more than a second faster than everyone besides Switzerland’s Beat Feuza, who is sitting in second place, 0.63 seconds back.
“I wish I managed this race on [Saturday],” Svindal said after the run, adding that he believes that Ondrej Bank – who is in fifth place, 1.11 seconds back and sixth place Sylvan Zurbriggen, 1.22 seconds back, will be his most dangerous opponents going into the slalom portion of the race. He also said he wasn’t able to train slalom as planned on Sunday because he was with his physical therapist, making sure his shoulder and right knee were OK.
“I’m not sure how my slalom form is, so we’ll see,” he said.
Following Beat, whose best super-combi/combined result on the World Cup is 10th (in Kitzbuehel and Chamonix this season), Italian Christof Innerhofer is lighting the place up again, sitting in third but 1.18 seconds out although he finished fourth at the World Cup super-combined in Wengen this year and has podiumed twice in the discipline in 2009 and 2007. Sitting in fourth place so far, fellow Italian Peter Fill – who also has two super-combi – is 1.34 seconds out.
Finland’s Andreas Romar, whose best results on the World Cup are in super-combined, but never better than 15th, fired into seventh place after the downhill run on Monday and has1.70 seconds to make up in the slalom.
The rest of the field is more than two seconds back, beginning with eighth place Paris Dominik, Kevin Rigail Esteve of Andorra – who has never scored any points on the World Cup – in ninth and Bode Miller in 10th.
World Cup super-combined and overall leader Ivica Kostelic, who took bronze in last week’s super G but skipped the downhill to keep his knees healthy, also opted out of Monday’s race.

The slalom kicks off at 14:00 at Gudiberg in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Yes I totally borrowed this from FIS Alpine. I figured it was easier to post what was wrote instead of just posting a link. So happy for Aksel. :-)
Oh before I forget. Actually I did & am editing the post. In math class today the teacher gave us a story problem. In the Winter Olympics the US won 10 more medals than Norway. The 2 countries together won 58 medals. How many each? I was LMAO & I so wanted to LOL. I got 2 smiles on my face within an hour of each other. Today is a good day.

Then another person came to me and said, " May I help you ? ". I think I should have asked him if there was a rabbit. ... ;-))) I'll go to the Suntory Hall again tomorrow for the orchestral concert, so I'll try to spy it again. ...
Have a beautiful evening, my dear dana ! Kisses & Hugs !

ReplyDeleteAfter I handed my coat to the person in the cloakroom of the Suntory Hall tonight, I didn't move soon and stood at the counter for a while. ReplyDeleteFunny ! I lost the first text, and posted the last one, and then the first one came back. I think I am played by my pc. ... :-)))
My computer is at the repair center now!!! Hopefully they will send it back soon. I just bought another Acer for a back-up computer incase this happens again. It was a bundle deal from Wal-Mart. I got the 15.6 Acer, 4GB flashdriver, carrying case & the printer I was going to buy anyway for $13 more than the laptop by itself. It was $30 more, but with my discount it was cheaper.
ReplyDelete@ Nicoletta Thanks for sharing the video. It was a spectacular performance. I would have loved to have been there.
@Ekaterina
ReplyDeleteThat is wonderful that you have already tickets for Bayreuth. What are you going to see?
I had a look at the programme
Ha Ha
http://www.bayreuther-festspiele.de/english/programme_157.html
So you have a big choice of Wagner operas. You must be really into music, Ekaterina.
For me this is to much heavy stuff, I must say!
I "survived" once a great Longrin performance in Zurich. With the Finish singer Salminen - you will know him.
Here an example Salminin in Götterdämmerung:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AV43HVl59c0
He has a beautiful, very deep voice, and for me the first 30 min. were amazing! Also to look at his huge leather clothes, I mean watching this big enormous man.
But because Wagner opera are mostly taking around 4 hours.
I went down with my chair, down, down, down .....
You know Ekaterina, what I mean?? LOL!
@Ekaterina & @Mel
ReplyDeleteGlad you could see the Rosenkavalier, I love it too.
Happy, we finally can trust on Youtube and I have to forget the useless Videoportal!! LOL
@Mel
Congrats to your new Acer computer. So you are well equipped for the future - whatever will happen, Mel!
@All
Have a happy day!
@Nicoletta.
ReplyDeleteyes ! I know what you mean ! Nicolettchen !
They have long hours of performance........
The tickets I have for the Bayreuther Festspiele 2011 are those :
27. August - Parsifal
28. August - Tristan und Isolde
This year, there is no performance of Ring.
And, thanks for the link of Matti Salminen in Gotterdammerung. As you see, he is one of the great Wagner singers. Rene Pape is also my favorite.
You " survived " Lohengrin ! I know there are many reputed Wagner's performance in Zurich Opera. I enjoyed " Lohengrin " in Bayreuth last summer.
Talking about the opera performance, there is always " for & against " on the production, and in this point, Bayreuth may not be the best, bc Bayreuther Festspiele often claims as if it is the experimental opera theater.
Nicoletta, do you know the greatest difference between Bayreuth Festspielehaus and other opera theater in the world ? It's the orchestra pit. In Bayreuth, the orchestra pit is placed underground. Correctly speaking, there is the roof in the orchestra pit and that roof is the stage for the performance. So it has the special acoustics.
For me, my most favorite music is probably the orchestral music. Probably here means I also love many other music, but I love the orchestra. And among the orchestral music, I mostly prefer to the big orchestra. Wagner, Mahler, Bruckner, ... and so on.
And, my dear Nicoletta, even I sometimes become sleepy during the opera performance. It depends on my health condition though. But I've never felt sleepy during the performance of the symphony or the orchetral music by Mahler and Bruckner. I think it is because they are within 100 minutes or so and I can concentrate.
btw, I think th Attacking Vikings are thinking about another medals in Garmisch. 2 or 3 can be possible, and I'm very much looking forward to GS on Friday. But I cannot check it live, bc I go to the concert that day and won't be able to back home in time for the race. The concert on this Friday is the Strings Quartet. Then you understand " probably ".
Have a pleasant evening, my dear Nicoletta ! Kisses & Hugs !
@Ekaterina
ReplyDeleteI am sure, you will enjoy the two Wagner operas "Tristan and Isolde" and "Parsifal" very much, Ekaterina!
The whole atmoshpere will be great, and it must be exiting to watch Wagner operas at Bayreuth!
I had a check with youtube, and were listening to Bruckner and Mahler last evening.
I love this kind of classical music too. It is always wonderful and absolutely amazing to watch the musicians and the conductor in action.
Found these two examples:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVTemkkT0UI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4iN2VJoBRk&feature=channel
You are right because of the lenght of the Wagner operas, Ekaterina. But for me, it has also to do with the very severe and intensive kind of classic music.
Enjoy your concert on Friday, Ekaterina!
Wish you a beautiful day, Ekaterina! Hugs & Kisses!
@Nicoletta.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link of the middle part of the finale of Bruckner No.8 with Berliner Philharmoniker conducted by Thielemann, and the very first part of the finale of Mahler No.7 with also my most favorite Berliner Philharmioniker conducted by Haitink.
Yes, I love watching them in action, too !
Taking about Bruckner, I think No.4 is played in the concert very often, and No.7, No.8, then No.9 followed by No.5 and No.3, and possibly No.6. No.1 and No.2 are seldom played.
Among his 9 symphonies, I love No.8 most.
Do you remember I went to the concert of Wienner Phiharmoniker conducted by Welser-Most in Tokyo last autumn ? It was Bruckner No.7 and it was marvelous.
But so long as I know, the best combination for Bruckner is the both Berliner Philharmoniker and Munchener Philharmoniker conducted by Thielemann.
And as for Mahler, it is not so easy to be played in the concert as Bruckner, simply because it needs more instruments ( for example No.2 needs 10 trumpets ), and some of them needs singers and the chorus. No.7 is an unique symphony. There are one mandolin and one guitar in the orchestra ( not in the finale ), while No.4 is another unique one, there is no trombone in the orchestra.
I think No.1 is played the most often,it is because you only have to add one trumpet to the orchestra. No.5 is probably secondly often played, and No.3, No.2, No.9, No.6,and No.7. Strange to speak, No.7 is not so often played in the concert, then followed by No.8.
It's very difficult to choose my best favoite among those 9 symphonies by Mahler ( No.10 is an unaccomplished symphony ), but No.2 is always among my best 3. No.2, No.3, No.9, No.5, No.7, and then No.8 and No.4. I'm not fond of No.1 so much, but I love other all 8, I think. Talking back to Bruckner, No.8, No.9, No.7, No.3, No.4, No.5 and No.6. maybe. ...
The symphony No.2 by Mahler is loved by people the most, I think. It's an enthusiastic music.
10 trumpets in the orchestra means it needs more strings than usual to take the balance of the whole sound of orchestra, so naturally when it is played " tutti ", the sound is very powerful.
... continues ...
@Nicoletta.
ReplyDelete... continues ...
I think the best combination for Mahler is Berliner Philharmoniker conducted by Abbado. and possibly conducted by Dudamel.
My dear Nicoletta, I'm not sure if you've heard the name of Gustavo Dudamel, but he is very excellent
I'm sorry to write such a long text ! But I cannot stop it .......
Hope you enjoy nice Friday evening, Nicolettchen ! Kisses & Hugs !
@dana.
ReplyDeleteI asked my dad about his schedule this weekend so that I'll be able to take my time. He said his guests visit us at 16:00 on Saturday. So I'm going to the grocery and buy cabbages in the morning on Saturday, and made the whole picked cabbages. Very exciting !!!
Hope you are well and be able to watch Aksel's race live on Friday, I mean you rush to your house just after work ! Kisses & Hugs !
@Nicoletta.
ReplyDeleteRe : my comment in ALS about the viking helmet.
I've seen many pictures of the production of " Ring " in old times, some of the costume looks like viking, especially a helmet. It's true.
Changing subject, Nicolettchen, I forget " it " every time I post.
" Egypt is Egypt ", you're right, and we talk like that, too, in Tokyo.
@Ekaterina
ReplyDeleteWell, thank you very much for writting so much about Mahler and Bruckner.
You know, I am not at all an expert with classic concert music. But I got inspired, and whenever I have the chance to go to a classical event I choose a Bruckner or Mahler concert!!
My aunt is pretty good in classic, I want to ask her if she knows the symphonies you mentionned. I am quite sure, she is even able to repeat a part of the melodies. Ha Ha
Regarding the Viking and Wagner operas, I presume you think of Wotan. Found this wiki info
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wotan
Wagner loved obviously all these old German or Nordic godnesses very much, the so called mythology. For example Walküre, Siegfried, etc. So most of his operas are about them I presume.
So I think, Aksel is perfectly right to take again his Viking symbol on his new helmet. Aksel and the Viking that is something that he never should change.
Wish you pleasant dreams, Ekaterina, not from Wagner operas, too many dramas!! LOL
Good night, Ekaterina! Hugs!
P.S.: Here the wiki link about Wagner, Maybe you like it!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Wagner#Opera
Maybe I look at it, when I have more time.
@Ekaterina
ReplyDeleteI'm sure your second try will be a successful one! You're very determined to make sour cabbage by yourself and I wish you good luck, my dear!:)
I'll be at work during the first Aksel's run tomorrow but I hope to watch him there! Anyway I'll watch the second run at home. I wish him another podium, but more than this I wish him to be safe and sound!
I heard Didier Cuche is injured, he has a broken finger, Benni Raich has his ligaments and the meniscus broken at one of his knees. Today Hannes Reicheldt has injured!!! Hope all the guys will stay safe tomorrow!
I know you're sleeping right now and I wish you to have a restful night and sweet dreams! I wonder what your little sister is dreaming about? A little mouse? Or a sexy tomcat? LOL
Love, kisses and hugs!
@mel so do you have now two laptop/computers?
ReplyDeletei hope your will be soon back again!
@Corinna Yes now I have 2 laptops. It's just to get me through until I get my baby back. Then I will put it up & probably use it for my bakery when I open it.
ReplyDeleteWent back to work today & they are trying to get me to quit. They picked on me all day. I knew there was a reason they wanted me to come back early. Sorry I'm not quitting they are gonna have to fire me. Such a stressful day. Best part: My computer & printer came today!!!! So excited about it!!!
